Travel

Flying is the only practical option for getting to Lizard Island. Several live-aboard dive boats and a cruise ship call in to the island regularly but the cost of these trips is much higher than the airfare. A supply barge comes to Lizard Island from Cairns once every two weeks but it does not carry passengers (see Freight). There is no ferry service to Lizard Island from any port.

Lizard Island is accessed by one or more daily scheduled flights from Cairns, Queensland, by light aircraft. The flight takes about one hour and the return fare is currently A$398 (as at August 2007). Baggage on the scheduled flight is limited to 32 kg per person, including carry-on baggage. Voyages, the company that runs the Lizard Island Resort, charters Hinterland Aviation for this service.

Bookings are made through Voyages on travel@voyages.com.au or by phoning 1300 134044 from within Australia only. When booking, tell Voyages that you will be staying at the Research Station and advise them of your connecting flight details if applicable. Hinterland's terminal is at General Aviation, Cairns Airport, which is on the opposite side of the runway from the international and domestic terminals - about a 10 minute drive. If Voyages knows in advance that you need transfers to the main terminals, they will arrange a complimentary bus. If they don't have this information in advance, you will have to take a taxi at a cost of about A$15. Note that scheduled flight bookings cannot be made directly with Hinterland.

It is advisable to reserve seats as soon as you have organised your dates at the Station because the small aircraft is often fully booked and you may not be able to travel on the dates you wish if you leave it too late.

On arrival at Lizard Island, you will be met and transferred to the Research Station by vehicle. Please advise the arrival time of your flight so we know when to expect you.

For groups of four or more people travelling together, a charter flight may be cheaper and/or more convenient. Numerous companies in Cairns offer this service, including Hinterland. When obtaining quotes from air charter companies:

  • Ensure that the quote includes the landing fee at Lizard Island, which is charged per aircraft per landing. Visitors to the Research Station are not exempt from the landing fee. The operators in Cairns do not uniformly include this fee in their quotes, so make sure it is specified.
  • Find out the baggage allowance for the quoted aircraft. Either stick to that allowance or arrange for more capacity.
