Exporting Specimens From Australia

This information is provided as a service to Lizard Island Research Station visitors. It is the Station's interpretation of permitting requirements as they apply to work at Lizard Island. For definitive information about export permits, contact the authority that issues them:

A permit is required to export virtually any animal from Australia. There are two ways of exporting specimens.

1. For export of material for taxonomic purposes (museum to museum exchanges), the package containing the specimens must have attached a 'Customs Declaration Form' with the following information:

  • The scientific names and descriptions of the specimens
  • The Australian organisation's name and registration code number
  • The receiving organisation's anme and registration code number
  • For a CITES specimen, a clear statement that the shipment is in accordance with CITES Articles VII.6 and the Appendix to CITES in which the species is listed.

If the receiving organisation already has a registration code, and if the export is genuinely for taxonomic purposes, the Australian Museum will facilitate the export through the Lizard Island Research Station. If the receiving organisation does not have a registration code, the process of obtaining one is extremely long. Overseas visitors who wish to export specimens collected at Lizard Island for taxonomic purposes should make enquiries of the Research Station as soon as possible to determine whether their institutions are registered.

CITES material is defined as those taxa currently listed on Schedules 1 and 2 of the Wildlife Protection (Regulation of Exports and Imports) Act 1982; these Schedules are normally the same as current Appendices I and II of the Convention of International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora. Corals and tridacnid clams are among CITES-listed taxa.

2. Export of animals for other scientific purposes must be covered by a specific permit. Contact Environment Australia for advice on the procedure.
