How to get food to Lizard Island

Food is ordered in Cairns and delivered to Lizard Island by barge every two weeks. You can bring small quantities with you as baggage from Cairns but you must stay within the baggage limit of 32 kg per person, which includes cabin baggage.

Barge freight

Ordering hints

Space for refrigerator and freezer storage is limited and your ordering should take this into account.

  • Order only enough food to last for the period from your arrival to the day the next barge arrives. You should aim to have an almost-empty fridge and freezer by the time barge day comes around.
  • Do not order bulky items that need refrigeration such as watermelon (do without) and large quantities of fresh milk (order UHT instead).
  • Think about how much bread you really need - almost everyone orders too much.

Timing of orders

The barge loads in Cairns every second Monday, arriving at Lizard Island two days later. The schedule is listed below.

Send orders to the suppliers separately for each barge, within the 6 day period listed in the schedule below. Confusion results if you send orders for two barges at once. If orders are sent to the suppliers too early, goods are sometimes sent on an earlier barge than intended, resulting in storage problems and spoilage. If orders are sent too late, you will miss out!

To avoid timing difficulties, overseas visitors can send orders to the Research Station rather than directly to the suppliers, and we will place the orders for you at the correct time. These orders should be sent to the Station at least a week earlier than shown in the schedule below. We will always confirm receipt of food orders by email. Do not assume that we have received your order until you get confirmation. If you do not get confirmation, contact the Research Station at least two days before the orders need to be with the suppliers.

Coles supplies groceries, fruit and vegetables. You can use the order form provided or write your own. If you write your own, please organise it into the categories: non-perishables, freezer, cold store, fruit & veg. Cairns Link is a small business that will do any shopping you require in Cairns. Some visitors to the Research Station order fruit and veg from this supplier in preference to Coles. Again, you can use the order forms provided or write your own. Cairns Link charges a service fee of $44 or 15% of the order value, whichever is greater.

Wine, beer and spirits are ordered from a Cairns supplier who requires the Research Station to consolidate the orders for each barge. Send your liquor order to the Research Station by email within the ordering period listed in the schedule - you can use the order form provided or write your own. You must provide credit card authorisation for liquor orders. The supplier charges a fee for delivery to the barge yard.

Payment for food

There are two ways to pay for your food from Coles and Cairns Link:

  1. Quote your Mastercard or Visa details on the orders. As well as the number, print your name, provide a signature and don't forget to include the card expiry date.
  2. Charge your food to the Station's accounts with Coles and Cairns Link.

If you give your credit card number to the suppliers, there is no additional charge for using a credit card.

If you charge your orders to the Station's account, payment must be made at the Station before you leave or at monthly intervals for long-term visitors. If you repay the Station for your food by cash or cheque, the amount owing is exactly as charged by Coles and Cairns Link. However, if you pay the Station by credit card, you will be charged an additional 3% to cover credit card merchant fees. Using the LIRS accounts carries an obligation to pay the Station promptly for expenses incurred on your behalf, regardless of any disputes you may have with the suppliers.

Liquor must be paid by credit card directly to the supplier. Show type of credit card, name on card, card number and expiry date on the order that you send to the Research Station. Don't forget to include the expiry date as the charge cannot be authorised without it.
