Collecting Permits for Student Groups

Lizard Island itself is a National Park and it is situated in the waters of the Great Barrier Reef Marine Park. Because of this, any extractive or manipulative activity requires one or more permits. The Station holds a permit for limited collecting of marine organisms for educational purposes that covers the requirements of many visiting groups. The permit allows for collection of up to two specimens per species of reef biota for observation in aquaria - all specimens must be returned alive to the Reef after use. If additional permits are required, application should be made to the relevant authorities at least four months before the trip.
