Size and Composition of a Student Group

The maximum size for student groups (including supervisors) is usually 22 people although groups of up to 26 in total can be accommodated at certain times. Ideally, all group members should be competent swimmers. There must be at least ten people in the group to qualify for the student group fee.

For secondary schools, there should be at least one adult supervisor for every four or five students; the ratio can be higher for university groups. One adult supervisor will be designated as the snorkelling co-coordinator. S/he has special responsibilities as outlined in the Station's snorkelling regulations for groups and as such, s/he should have adequate snorkelling and boating experience. Each adult supervisor should be fit and active, a competent swimmer, and capable of driving a small outboard powered boat after on-site instruction.
