Development Plan

Developments planned for the Station over the next ten years include:

  • Enhancement of telecommunications to allow fast access to the internet
  • Refurbishment of kitchens and replacement of roofs to Kirby and Suntory Houses
  • Replacement of the oldest visitor house (Talbot)
  • Extension and refurbishment of the smallest visitor house (Loomis)
  • Extension and refurbishment of the Raymond E. Purves Laboratory
  • Replacement of the original laboratory building (Old Lab and Live Lab)
  • Refurbishment of Griffin Laboratory
  • Acquisition of new laboratory equipment
  • Staged replacement of aquarium pumps and fittings
  • New 6 metre high-speed catamaran
  • Decreased reliance on diesel fuel for electricity by development of a hybrid solar or wind system
  • Replacement of the original part of the workshop
  • Construction of a large storage shed
  • Construction of a visitors' centre comprising a library, seminar room, meeting room, shop and offices
  • Staged replacement of dinghy fleet
  • Staged replacement of generators
  • Staged replacement of scuba filling compressors
  • Regular replacement of outboard motors, vehicles, generators and boats combined with diligent maintenance is the most cost-effective way of ensuring equipment that works, and this policy will be continued.
