Boats

A dinghy and condor

The Lizard Island Research Station has a fleet of boats for use by its visitors. Open dinghies are used within the Lizard Island Group and two larger boats are available for visits to reefs further afield. Each research team or student group is usually allocated a self-drive dinghy for its sole use during the visit. The larger boats usually require a staff boat driver and must be booked well in advance. Use of a dinghy is included in the daily bench fee but additional costs apply to using the larger boats.

Most dinghies have ample open deck space

All boats are equipped with safety equipment as required by state regulations. Outboard motors are replaced on a two-yearly schedule to ensure reliability. A Queensland recreational shipmaster's licence is required to drive some of the boats although a boat licence from another Australian state is acceptable for up to 90 days. All visitors are thoroughly briefed on boat handling, the Station's boating regulations, safety gear and local boating conditions.

The current fleet comprises 12 vessels:
